Abstract
A Validation Study of the Korean College Academic Perfectionism Scale RANHEE SEO Advisor : Prof. Na-Rae Kim, Ph. D Department of Counseling Psychology Graduate School of Chosun University The purpose of this study was to establish the Korean College Academic Perfectionism Scale (K-CAPS) by testing the reliability and validity of the College Academic Perfectionism Scale (CAPS) developed in the United States with Korean college students. The original scale was developed by Liu, Berzenski (2022). This paper analyzed data using statistical programs SPSS 27.0 and AMOS 27.0. First, we explained the purpose and application of the study to Berzenski, the original author, and asked for his consent for a validation study of the scale. Afterwards, the original scale was translated into Korean, and the final translated scale was completed through back-translation and proofreading by a bilingual user and evaluation of the meaning between the original scale items and the back-translated items by a native speaker. Next, a self-report questionnaire was administered to 400 university students nationwide in South Korea, utilizing the Korean College Academic Perfectionism Scale (K-CAPS), Maslach Burnout Inventory—Student Survey (MBI-SS), GAD-7, Big Three Perfectionism Scale (BTPS), Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Academic Stress Scale, Academic Initiation-Completion Procrastination Scale (AICPS) and Academic Self-Efficacy Scale. As a result of an exploratory factor analysis conducted on 200 college students, the Korean College Academic Perfectionism Scale consisted of 4 factors, the same as the original scale, and showed high reliability. The results of a confirmatory factor analysis conducted on another group of 200 college students indicated that the Korean College Academic Perfectionism Scale demonstrated adequate model fit. As a result of verifying convergent and discriminant validity, the Korean College Academic Perfectionism Scale showed a positive correlation with BTPS, GAD-7, CES-D, Academic Stress. Discriminant validity was verified as it showed a low level of positive correlation with MBI-SS and AICPS, and a low level of negative correlation with academic self-efficacy. As a result of conducting a hierarchical regression analysis to verify incremental validity, the Korean College Academic Perfectionism Scale, excluding the self-oriented academic perfectionism factor, showed a significant additional explanatory amount for anxiety and academic stress when compared to the BTPS. Through the above results, it was confirmed that the Korean College Academic Perfectionism Scale is a reliable and valid scale. In the discussion and results, the significance and limitations of the study based on the research results were explained, and the direction for future research were suggested.
