Objective: This research aimed to examine the correlations between grit, clinical decision-making, and nursing performance perceived by nurses in small and medium sized hospitals. Additionally, the study investigated the influence of grit and clinical decision-making on nursing performance among these nurses, providing data to enhance nursing performance.
Methods: This descriptive correlational research investigated the relationships between grit, clinical decision-making, and nursing performance perceived by nurses working in small and medium sized hospitals. Data were collected from June 1 to July 31, 2023, from 140 nurses who were conveniently sampled and over six months of experience in four small and medium sized hospitals (100 to less than 300 beds) located in G city. Data analysis employed SPSS 26.0, including frequency analysis, percentages, means, standard deviations, independent t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe post hoc tests, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple linear regression.
Resluts: The participants’ level of grit averaged 2.87±0.32 out of 4 points, the degree of clinical decision-making averaged 3.28±0.23 out of 5 points, Nursing performance had an average score of 3.66±0.50 out of 5 points,
Nursing performance levels were influenced by marital status(t =-2.77, p=.006), position(F=7.27, p=.008), current department experience(t=-2.47, p=.015), and job satisfaction(t=2.08, p=0.39). There were significant positive correlations between nursing performance and grit(r=.48 p<.001) as well as clinical decision-making(r=.33, p<.001).
Grit was identified as a significant predictor of nursing performance(β=.36), explaining 25% of the variance.
Conclusion: This study confirmed that grit is a variable influencing nursing performance in small and medium sized hospitals, providing an evidence for developing strategies to enhance nursing performance. Therefore, proposing the development of intervention programs encompassing nursing performance elements such as task performance ability, task performance attitude, performance level enhancement, and application of nursing process is recommended. Subsequent research should focus on verifying the effectiveness of such programs.
