Abstract

A Concept Mapping Study on the Challenges of University Life Adjustment for Military Discharged Students YEONGHEON KIM Advisor : Prof. Na-Rae Kim, Ph. D Department of Counseling Psychology Graduate School of Chosun University In this study, through a conceptual map study, we tried to find out the challenges of university life adjustment for military discharged students. For this study, the first interview was conducted with eight returning students after being discharged from the military and 72 statements were extracted, In the second interview, eight study participants rated the degree of empathy for each statement and classified similar statements among them. Based on the final collected data, a conceptual diagram was created by conducting a multidimensional scale method and hierarchical cluster analysis using SPSS 27.0. First, looking at the two dimensions derived from difficulties in adapting to college life of returning students after military discharge, the one-dimensional content was named "relational and contextual dimension-achievement performance dimension," and the two-dimensional content was named "emotional dimension-recognition dimension." Next, five clusters derived from difficulties in adapting to college life of returning students after military discharge were "lack of close relationships," "the stress of academic vacuum," "unformed affiliated groups," "negative self-image," and "impatience with employment and career decisions.“ This study is meaningful in deriving and understanding empirical data on college life adaptation for returning students in detail by conceptually structuring the experiences of returning students' difficulties in adapting to college life after being discharged from the military. In addition, by collecting and analyzing the specific characteristics and aspects of returning students' adaptation to college life as qualitative data, it was intended to provide basic data for follow-up studies that reveal the basis for practical performance in the college student group's counseling or educational field.
