Abstract
Effects of β-Carotene Intake on Antioxidant Capacity, Fatigue and Physical Stress for Recovery from Exercise Fatigue in Obese Women Participating in High-intensity Interval Exercise Kim, Jung-Nim Advisor : Prof. Seo, Young-Hwan Ph. D. Department of Physical Education, Graduate School of Chosun University Obesity can be said to be the most fatal disease for modern people, and although the social and physiological severity of obesity and interest in exercise have increased compared to the past, the obesity rate among women continues to remain close to 30%. In order to maintain a healthy body and lose weight through exercise, regular and long-term exercise habits must be followed, but it is not easy for modern people with busy daily lives to invest consistent time and participate in exercise consistently. Therefore, effective weight control exercise methods for treating obesity are being proposed through scientific verification of effectiveness. High Intensity Interval Exercise is an exercise method that is attracting attention as an effective exercise method for weight loss due to the high number of calories consumed compared to the time performed. However, compared to other exercise methods, exercise fatigue is very high due to the rapid increase in lactate, and if it accumulates chronically, it causes acidification of the body and increases stress. To prevent this oxidation, the human body needs antioxidants, and nutritional support through functional foods will be the most accessible and convenient method. Among functional food supplements with antioxidant properties, β-Carotene is a type of isochemical and is a powerful antioxidant that is mainly orange, yellow, or red in color. Accordingly, this study is needed to determine how 9 weeks of β -Carotene intake affects antioxidant capacity, exercise fatigue, and physical stress in obese women who participate in high-intensity exercise. The subjects of this study were 23 obese women in the age range of 20 to 49 years with a BMI of 25 kg/m2 and a Lactate test of 3 mmol/L or less. They were E.I.G(Exercise & Intake Group) who performed high-intensity interval exercise while taking β-Carotene provided by the researcher. and Intake Group) of 12 people and O.E.G(Only Exercise Group) of 11 people who only performed high-intensity interval exercise without the intake of β-Carotene, and was conducted for a total of 9 weeks. Antioxidant Capacity, exercise fatigue, and physical stress were measured and analyzed for comparison. β-Carotene intake was taken once a day after lunch. The measurement period was 1st (at rest before exercise), 2nd (immediately after the end of the first exercise), and 3rd (immediately after the end of the last exercise). Independent samples T-test and T-test were used to verify differences between groups at each time. To verify the effect of treatment by group, repeated measures ANOVA was set to a significance level of ɑ=.05 or less for comparative analysis. Results A. Effect of antioxidant capacity 1. There was no significant difference in antioxidant capacity between the two groups in the first and second measurements (p>.05), and a significant difference was found in the third measurement (p<.001***). 2. The difference in the effect of improving antioxidant capacity showed a significant main effect in the time (p<.001***) and group (p<.05*) between the two groups, and the time*group (p<.001***), a significant interaction effect was found. B. Effects of exercise fatigue 1. There was no significant difference in exercise fatigue between the two groups in the first and second measurements (p>.05), and a significant difference was found in the third measurement (p<.001***). 2. The difference in exercise fatigue recovery effect showed a significant main effect in time (p<.001***) and group (p<.01**), and time*group (p<.001***), a significant interaction effect was found. C. Effects of physical stress 1. There was no significant difference in physical stress between the two groups in the first and second measurements (p>.05), and a significant difference was found in the third measurement (p<.001***). 2. The difference in physical stress reduction effect showed a significant main effect in time (p<.001***) and group (p<.05*), and time*group (p<.001***), a significant interaction effect was found. Therefore, β-Carotene intake to recover from exercise fatigue, which obese women may be physiologically vulnerable to during high-intensity interval exercise, can be presented as an effective nutritional method for increasing antioxidant capacity and reducing exercise fatigue and physical stress compared to non-consumption.
