Factors affecting awareness of material safety data sheets and Practice of safety health of workers handling hazardous chemicals at medical institutions

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the awareness of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) among workers at medical institutions that handle hazardous chemicals and Practice of safety health

Methods: A survey was conducted on 262 clinical pathologists and nurses working at medical institutions. After excluding 7 respondents who were insincere in their answers, the final 255 respondents were analyzed using the statistical program SPSS version 27.0. According to general characteristics, safety and health educational characteristics, and MSDS data utilization characteristics, material safety and health data (MSDS) awareness and safety and health practice were analyzed using the following analysis methods. Each characteristic of the study subjects was expressed in frequency and percentage, the significance test for each characteristic was t-test and ANOVA analysis, and the variables that were significant in the significance test were subjected to multiple linear regression analysis. Item-reliability of the questionnaires, MSDS awareness Cronbach's α=.894, and Practice of safety health Cronbach's α=0.766. were obtained.

Results: The average score for the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) awareness item was 3.82 out of 5, with the lowest awareness score of 3.22 for knowing the contents of the MSDS for the substances being handled. The highest score was for the awareness of the necessity to provide information about the substances handled, which scored 4.35. The average score for Practice of safety health, on a scale of 5, was 3.84. The lowest Practice of safety health score was 3.45, which was for the Practice of safety health of knowing the contents of the MSDS and working with the substances being handled. Among the safety and health practice scores, the highest score was 4.47 points for safety and health practices such as washing hands after finishing work and before eating. Factors affecting awareness include experience using MSDS data, department, training experience, and number of trainings. Factors affecting Practice of safety health include hospital type, experience using MSDS data, need for MSDS, and help with MSDS data

Conclusion: Among various factors, safety and health education and use of MSDS data were the most significant. Based on these results, we will explore the importance of utilizing various health education measures and MSDS data based on the results of this study in the future to prevent obstacles to workers handling hazards and risks that may come from hazardous chemicals and achieve effective health management. It can be used as basic data on the safety culture of workers at medical institutions.
