- Abstract
- The benign skin and soft tissue tumors are relatively common, and do not cause serious problems for patients. However, the incidence of benign skin and soft tissue tumors is recently increasing due to environmental factors and growth in the elderly population. Various treatments for benign skin and soft tissue tumors have been developed, although surgical treatments may be necessary because of failure and recurrence of non-surgical procedure.
We performed a retrospective review of 309 patients with benign tumors of skin and soft tissue who were diagnosed and treated by plastic surgeons in Chosun University Hospital from 2013 to 2017. We analyzed the patients demographics, tumor classifications and location, treatments methods, and complications based on the medical records.
Since 2013, patients with benign skin and soft tissue tumors were increased steadily, and they were most frequent in the age of 30s. The predilection site of benign tumors was head and neck area (85.8%). The most common benign tumors were epidermal cysts with 114 cases (36.9%), followed by 51 cases of lipoma (16.5%), and 41 cases of melanocytic nevus (13.3%). Postoperative complications were bacterial infection, recurrence, hematoma formation, and wound dehiscence, and they were treated with secondary intentions.
This study was to investigate patient epidemiology, surgical treatment, and complications of benign skin and soft tissue tumors in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Because the number of surgical treatment in patients with benign skin tumors will be increased, this will help in further patient care, treatment and prevention of complications.
