Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the double mediating effects of positive urgency and positive alcohol expectancy in the relationship between hypomanic personality and problem drinking. To investigate this, a self-report survey was conducted with 399 young adults in South Korea (138 males, 179 females) aged 20 to 30. The measures used included the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS), the Korean version of the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS-P), the Korean version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-K), and the Alcohol Expectancy Scale (AES). The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and PROCESS MACRO V3.3. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. Firstly, significant positive correlations were found between hypomanic personality traits, problem drinking, positive urgency, and positive alcohol expectancy only in the female group. Secondly, the relationship between hypomanic personality and problem drinking was found to be mediated by positive urgency and positive alcohol expectancy only in the female group. These results suggest that positive urgency and positive alcohol expectancy play a significant role in the relationship between hypomanic personality and problem drinking. Lastly, the implications of the study findings, limitations, and suggestions for future research were discussed.
