- Abstract
- Background : Diabetes and pre-diabetes, whose prevalence is steadily increasing in South Korea, have several risk factors, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is known as one of them. OSA is increasing in domestic prevalence like diabetes, and several studies have revealed that it increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases and metabolic diseases including diabetes. However, the mutual mechanism between OSA and blood glucose control has not been clarified. This study aimed to find out how the risk of OSA differs according to fasting blood glucose.
Methods : This study used the results of the 2019-2021 analysis of the 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) to investigate how the risk of OSA differs according to fasting blood sugar in Korean adults aged 40 years or older. The level of fasting blood glucose was divided into normal, pre-diabetic, and diabetic stages, and the risk of obstructive sleep apnea was classified into low, intermediate, and high risk using the STOP-BANG questionnaire. After considering variables including blood tests, lifestyle, and chronic diseases like obesity, the relationship was studied. IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA) was used for statistical analysis.
Results : In Korean adults aged 40 years or older, the odds ratio for the risk of OSA increased significantly in the group with pre-diabetic or diabetic fasting glucose levels compared to the group with normal fasting glucose levels. In the case of fasting blood glucose at the level of diabetes, the moderate risk of OSA showed an odds ratio of 1.765 (95% confidence interval(CI) 1.500-2.077, p <0.001), and the odds ratio of high risk was about 2.182 (95% CI 1.547-3.079, p <0.001), independently of obesity
Conclusion : Compared to the group with normal fasting blood glucose, the group with prediabetes or diabetes may have a higher risk of obstructive sleep apnea.
