Abstract
Objective: This study aims to determine the usefulness of predicting musculoskeletal pain among power-line workers who install, repair, and maintain electrical power-lines for distribution using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS)

Methods: A total of 540 male Power-line worker from the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions were evaluated at the Workers' Health Center in G Metropolitan City. Musculoskeletal pain was assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) in collaboration with an exercise prescriber and a physical therapist. The pain assessment focused on the shoulder, waist, and lower limbs among 30 body categories. Additionally, a functional movement screen (FMS) test was conducted by a group consisting of two exercise prescribers and one physical therapist to evaluate the workers' body functional abilities. The results were analyzed based on age and occupation.
Results: The results of FMS showed a significant difference in functional movement ability based on age, with a decrease in ability observed as age or experience increased. Among the FMS items, trunk stability push-up demonstrated excellent ability, which directly related to the power-line worker's tasks. On the other hand, the inline lunge showed unstable ability, indicating a correlation with the work environment of Power-line workers. Predicting musculoskeletal pain among Power-line workers revealed that the odds ratio for shoulder pain was 3.566, significantly higher for all age groups except those aged 20-39, indicating a high prevalence of shoulder musculoskeletal pain among these workers. The Kappa value for joint pain in the identification test and subjective musculoskeletal pain was less than 0.40, indicating insufficient agreement. An ROC analysis was conducted to predict musculoskeletal pain based on the FMS yielded an area under the curve of 0.695 for the shoulder, 0.728 for the waist, and 0.703 for the lower extremity, These results suggest, moderate accuracy in predicting musculoskeletal pain The optimal cut-off score for discriminating musculoskeletal pain using the FMS was determined to be 9.5 points, providing valuable data for predicting musculoskeletal pain.

Based on the study results, several factors were identified as contributing to the weakening of functional ability among power-line workers, including limited shoulder joint mobility, shoulder peripheral muscle flexibility, scapular stability, thoracic spine stability, ankle mobility, knee stability, hip joint mobility, and left/right pelvic imbalance. Additionally, a lack of core stability function was observed.

Conclusions: The FMS demonstrated a significant relationship with risk factors associated with predicting musculoskeletal pain among power-line workers. Consequently, the FMS can be considered a useful evaluation tool for selecting exercise programs and managing musculoskeletal disorders in high-risk workers.
