Abstract
Phonological factors are one of the important factors that explain the characteristics of stuttering. Non-word repetition task is a useful task to examine the phonological processing ability, excluding the influence of the subject's vocabulary ability and background knowledge.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether non-word repetition performance differs according to phonological complexity among school-age children who stutter(CWS) and children who do not stutter(CWNS). The performance of the non-word repetition task according to the phonological complexity of each group was examined. In addition, the characteristics of disfluencies of CWS according to phonological complexity were examined.
The performance of non-word repetition task was examined by positive response score and Speech Reaction Time(SRT). Research questions included (1) Is there a difference in the positive response score and the SRT in non-word repetition task between groups? (2) Did the length and phonological complexity of each group affect the positive response score and the SRT in non-word repetition task? (3) whether the CWS group differs in the frequencies of disfluency categories(SLD, OD) according to the phonological complexity of non-word repetition task?
Results were presented as follows: (1) Between the two groups, there was no significant difference between the total positive response score(Z=-.723, p=.485) and the total SRT(Z=-.801, p=.485). Between the two groups, there was a significant difference in positive response scores in only four syllables non-word with high phonological complexity between the two groups(Z=-2.745, p=.004). there was no significant difference in the SRT according to the length of the non-words with low/high phonological complexity between the two groups. (2) CWS had a significant difference in positive response scores according to non-words length with low phonological complexity((2)=9.061, p=.028). In CWNS, there was a significant difference in positive response scores according to the length of non-words with high phonological complexity((2)=10.02, p=.018). In both groups, there was a significant difference in SRT according to the length of the non-words with high phonological complexity(CWS: (2)=8.700, p=.034)(CWNS: (2)=8.600, p=.035). (3) In the CWS group, The OD type increased in non-words with high phonological complexity, but the SLD type did not increase in non-words with high phonological complexity.
This study examined and discussed the impact of the phonological complexity and length on non-word repetition performances of CWS and CWNS. In addition, the effect of phonological complexity on the occurrence of disfluencies in CWS was examined.
