Abstract
Country risk is a long-established focus of attention in the construction industry due to its significant role in the success or failure of a project, however few studies have examined the impact of country risk on international construction porject in korea. Therefore, this study suggests that key risk in international construction project has a significant impact on construction cost using a partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique. The research hypothesises for the analysis are as follows. The is ‘The relationship between country risk factors and international construction cost can be structured and quantified’. and the is ‘The structural relationship between quantified country risk factors and international construction cost is different for each region where construction companies in korea enter’. Data were collected from 93 construction experts employed in the international construction project. Summary of result linked with the research hypothesises are as follows.
First, the risk of greatest impact on the international construction cost was 'Environment' with a value of 0.360. The risk directly affecting the 'Environment' were 'Culture' and ‘Economic’ with value of 0.475, 0.402, and the risk indirectly affecting the 'Enviroment' was 'Legal' with a value of 0.186.
Second, major country risk affecting international construction cost differed by region. The result of the analysis found that the risk of greatest impact on the international construction cost in the existing region was 'Legal' with a value of 0.305. The risk directly affecting the 'Legal' was 'Market' with a value of 0.605, and the risk indirectly affecting the 'Legal' was ‘Environment’ with a value of 0.400. On the other hand, the risk of greatest impact on the international construction costs in the arctic region was 'Environment' with a value of 0.586. The risk directly affecting the 'Environment' was 'Market' with a value of 0.789, and the risk indirectly affecting the 'Environment' was ‘Economic’ with a value of 0.392.
Therefore, construction companies in korea must prepare different countermeasures for major country risk factors by region. In addition, it is necessary to prepare a complex risk countermeasure plan that considers relationship between risk factors.
