- Abstract
- The eastern part of Jeollabuk-do is the region where the Seom-jingang River, Geum-gang River, and Nam-gang River originate and is the point where the Paleolithic culture of Jeollanam-do and Chungcheongnam-do meets along the river. The Chosun University Museum discovered 53 remains in this area for about 20 years, from 2000 to the latest, and collected many stone tools and archaeological data while excavating two of them. However, most of the data was not organized. More than half of the remains found have not been reported to academia, and they cannot take advantage of the archaeological value of data. Therefore, this paper aims to establish a database of 53 Paleolithic ruins distributed in the upper reaches of the Seomjin-gang River, Geum-gang River, and Nam-gang River. The Chosun University Museum surveyed the data to improve this problem and summarize these ruins' archaeological results. The surrounding area of the remains is widely distributed in the cretaceous period, and thus, the late Paleolithic stone tools made of acidic volcanic rocks are identified in many remains. These stone tools are estimated to be the period after 25,000 B.P., when stone tools appeared in Korea, referring to the dates of the Haga ruins and the Jingeuneul ruins, which were measured through excavation. Stone tools that appear to have been made earlier are found in several ruins, mostly made of quartz and quartzite. Handaxes made of acid volcanic rocks are also found in the Haga, Seulchi, and Duryu ruins. These relics are currently partially damaged by farmland, cemeteries, submerged districts, and houses without special protection measures. It is urgent to take preventative measures to protect the ruins before further damage occurs. The most realistic solution is to register the information about the remains in the administrative system, such as the cultural heritage protection and management map managed by the Cultural Heritage Administration. This plan is expected to be very effective for the management and protection of most relics. In this regard, building a database for the remains will provide data such as the archaeological value of the site, the scope of the site, and the location information, so that the site can be managed and preserved more efficiently.
