- Abstract
- Today's modern society has expanded to various social members, including children, pregnant women, the elderly, the disabled, and foreigners, increasing the needs and needs of members with various characteristics. A social environment is being created so that members of society can live more conveniently in various areas. Policy development according to the needs of various members is becoming active, and universal design that can meet the needs and needs of diverse users is becoming more important. The importance and necessity of universal design are highly recognized and applied to various places such as public facilities, parks, public design, and buildings. It is also subject to compliance obligations under various Acts and subordinate statutes. Despite these efforts, however, the recognition of universal design in Korea is low.
This study conducted an online survey of 200 students attending 117 art or design universities nationwide. As a result of distributing 200 questionnaires, 200 were recovered, but 198 were used as the final research data, excluding two insincere ones.
In the design process according to the degree of recognition of disabilities, the higher the degree of recognition of disabilities among the 10 types of disabilities, the higher the proportion of considering disabled people in design. However, even if the level of awareness of the type of disability is high, the number of respondents who have no experience designing considering the disabled is very high. This can be interpreted as a result of a lack of expertise in how to apply universal design. You can see that there are not many opportunities to learn about the principles of universal design, and there are not many opportunities to apply it, so you do not look for cases that have been applied. Therefore, universal design subjects should be organized in design majors to receive professional education.
This researcher believes that it is necessary to open and educate universal design subjects. Therefore, it is hoped that appropriate education will be provided to college students majoring in design through the opening of the universal design curriculum, and that the design range will be expanded to design regardless of gender, age, disability, or race.
