Abstract

The frequency, morphology, and location of the accessory foramen on the lingual surface of the mandible vary according to the type. In particular, the interalveolar foramen, which is located close to the alveolar crest and observed as a vertical radiolucent line, has a greater risk of complications due to damage compared to other accessory foramen. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the morphologic characteristics of the interalveolar foramen and to analyze according to sex and age using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. It was used a total of 110 CBCT images taken at the department of oral and maxillofacial radiology, Chosun University Dental Hospital. The number, frequency, and location based on tooth of the interalveolar foramen were investigated. The diameter of the interalveolar foramen, the vertical distance to upper margin of the interalveolar foramen, and the height to the alveolar crest of the mandible from the inferior border of the mandible were measured. The interalveolar foramen was observed at least one in 98.1% of 110 CBCT images and had 2 (41.8%) or 3 (40%) foramina. It was presented the highest between the central incisor and the lateral incisor at 69.5%, followed by 14.1% between the canine and the first premolar. The mean diameter of the interalveolar foramen was 0.71±0.21 mm, its mean vertical distance was 30.15±2.40 mm, and the mean height of the mandible was 32.84±2.80 mm. There was no significant difference according to sex, but there were significant differences in the elderly person in all measurement items. The interalveolar foramen with a larger diameter of 1 mm or more appeared in 26.4% of all subjects, and especially elderly females showed a high incidence of 29.3%. Therefore, these findings provide quantitative data on the interalveolar foramen that can be easily overlooked due to a fine anatomical structure during surgical procedures in the anterior region of the mandible.
