Abstract
In this study, the effects of styrene-methacrylic acid copolymers and ionomers on the dispersibility of asphaltenes in heavy oil were investigated. The first experiment was conducted to determine how the cation types of PSMA copolymers and ionomers affected the dispersibility of asphaltenes in heavy oil. As the dispersing agent used in the experiment, a PSMA copolymer having acid functional groups PS, PSMLi, PSMNa, and PSMCs ionomers were prepared. Then, an experiment was performed to measure the transmittance by changing the amount of the dispersants added to the heavy oil solution. The PSMA copolymer and pure PS slightly delayed the time for asphaltenes contained in heavy oil to aggregate and settle, but did not inhibit the aggregation. On the other hand, when the ionomer was added, it was confirmed that the dispersibility of asphaltene in heavy oil improved as the size of the cations used as the neutralizing agents of the ionomer decreased, regardless of the amount added. In addition, it was found that the dispersibility enhanced as the amount of ionomer increased, but it was also observed that there was an optimal concentration of the ionomers for the better dispersibility of the asphaltene. The second experiment was conducted to find out how the degree of amidation of the acid functional group of the copolymer used as a dispersant affected the dispersibility of asphaltene in heavy oil. First, PSODMA-7.5, PSODMA-11.0, and PSODMA-16.4 copolymers, where the acid functional groups of the PSMA copolymer were partially amidated with ODA were prepared. After that, the transmittance was measured with changing the amount of the dispersant in the heavy oil solution and the rotation rate of the solution. When PSODMA copolymer was added, it was founded that the dispersibility improved as the amidation degree increased. In addition, regardless of the degree of amidation, the dispersibility increased as the amount of PSODMA copolymer increased. However, in the case of PSODMA-7.5, the critical concentration of the polymer was seen at which dispersibility started to decrease with increasing amount of copolymer. Finally, comparing the dispersibility of asphaltenes by the addition of the ionomers and PSODMA, it was concluded that the effect of dispersing asphaltenes was much greater by the amidation of the acidic copolymer with alkylamines than by the ionomerization of the copolymer.
