- Abstract
- The live streaming contents market is continuously growing as they are free from the temporal and spatial limitation once the Internet is connected and accommodate various demands of the viewers by providing a variety of contents. Since the success of live-streaming service is on the viewer participation, researchers have studied the viewers’ motivation to participate and even donate to streamers. However, few studies have investigated this phenomenon with the method that directly monitors the viewer’s participation and donation behavior.
This study, therefore, delves into the viewers’ chatting data from the video game live-streaming services and applies topic modeling to find the topics that appear and how the chats with the donation differ from the chats without the donation. The results show that four topics emerge in the chat data: 1) the game that streamers play, 2) the elements appeared in the game, 3) the conversations about streamers, and 4) the conversations unrelated to the streaming contents. The fourth topic was the most frequently appeared in both general chats and donation chats, and it took more than a half in donation chats. The findings suggest that people who donate while watching video game live-streaming use a donation as a tool to show themselves and communicate with other users rather than talking about the game they are watching.
