Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate their awareness and needs about family support among parents of young children with special needs. A Total of 202 parents participated in this study by responding to a questionnaire. The questionnaire included the items regarding the parents' awareness of programs, agencies and associations for family support, and those regarding their experiences, needs for policies, contents and methods of family support programs.
Major findings are as follows:
First, the parents' awareness of the programs, agencies, and associations relevant to family support in Gwangju. There were significatn differences in their awareness of some programs, agencies, and associations according to their education level or socioeconomic status.
Second, they showed difficulties with anxiety about the future and conflict between couples, and there was a high demand for developmental rehabilitation services and treatment support. In the method of implementing the family support program, the demand for parental participation classes was the highest.
Third, parents' needs for family support did not show any difference according to their educational background, but there was a difference in the degree of needs for the contents of the family support program and the experience of parenting difficulties according to their socioeconomic status. In the group with difficult economic conditions, there were high level of needs for counseling related to parental psychology(emotionals), anxiety about the future, conflict between couples, lack of leisure and social activities of guardians.
Based on the above results, it is expected that more practical and effective family support programs can be operated at various institutions for supporting families of children with special needs.
