- Antioxidant Cosmeceutical Mountain Ginseng Adventitious Root Supercritical Fluid Extract
- The aim of this study was to find the optimal conditions for using supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent for extracting mountain ginseng adventitious root (MGAR), a potential functional cosmetic ingredient. The effect of extraction conditions (e. g., pressure, temperature and time) on extraction efficiency was investigated. The tested pressure and temperature ranges were 250 - 350 bar and 50 - 70℃ respectively, and 5% prethanol A solutions were used as co-solvents. Results showed that increases in pressure and temperature reduced total phenolic and total flavonoid content. Antioxidant capacity and enzyme inhibitory activity were assessed by Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and tyrosinase and elastase inhibitory activity. There was good correlation among total flavonoid, antioxidant capacity, and tyrosinase and elastase inhibitory activity. This indicated that the total flavonoid content of the extract exhibits antioxidant activity and has enzyme inhibition ability. Animal tests have shown that extracts improve skin elasticity by affecting by affecting skin barrier function. Therefore, MGAR extract is likely to be used as a functional cosmetic ingredient to prevent aging through skin whitening and wrinkle reduction, thus generating high added value in the cosmetic industry.
