A Study on Nail Design through the Application of Folk Art and UV Gel - with priority given to zhostovo

The stream of the times and the advance in the beauty industry have diversified ways of expression and materials available, and there are a lot of subsequent changes and development in form, technique and materials. Likewise, nail art is no longer a mere means to take care of hands and foot. Instead, that has emerged as a sort of creative behavior and a way for the display of individuality. And this trend started to be reflected in the beauty industry as well. Designers from different areas of the beauty industry satisfy the needs of people in general by creating diverse new ways of expression and through unique and artistic expressions. Indeed, they make ceaseless attempts to express in new ways and provide differentiated services to explore new areas and new possibilities. In this study, related articles and literatures were analyzed, and the nail art preference of consumers and the ways of expression of folk art were researched to explore various designs to meet needs for new expressions. Specifically, the form, composition, color and expression techniques of zhostovo works were analyzed to suggest the possibility of diverse artistic expressions of nail art by selecting zhostovo as a motif. In addition, UV gel and nail materials were grafted onto folk art to surpass the limits of nail art and folk art to expand the sphere of nail design. The purpose of this study was to attempt the grafting of zhostovo folk art with UV gel in an effort to be of use for the extension of the creative, artistic and technical nail design of nail art experts. Domestic and foreign literatures and articles were analyzed to make a theoretical analysis of the historical background, formative characteristics, color and techniques of zhostovo. And 10 works that were all different and in which unique expressions could be made were selected as motifs, and then the works were applied to nail art. Works of nail tip were produced in this way after designs were made by extending or reducing the works. The findings of the study were as follows: First, there were lots of design-related characteristics in zhostovo, because that could be used as a motif by reproducing, applying or simplifying nail designs. Second, as a result of applying zhostovo to nail designs, it's possible to create a visually gorgeous and rich color sense and make diverse design expressions though only stroke technique was used. Third, the application of UV gel and nail materials to zhostovo is expected to make it possible to create a wealth of designs and utilize diverse expression techniques. Fourth, it was possible to extend the scope of design conception for zhostovo folk art by producing works in which UV gel was grafted onto zhostovo nail design. In this study, dark background and colorful flowers that are the formative characteristics of zhostovo were mainly used to make the designs. It's found that although the same flower patterns are used, there are limitless ways to express the patterns depending on the designer and his or her intention. And the grafting of UV gel and other nail materials that are lately preferred by consumers is actually possible to do in nail shops, and some of the right directions for nail art design were suggested. This study is of significance in that zhostovo, which is folk art, was selected as a motif of nail design to explore diverse nail designs to make research on nail art design, and in that unique and artistic nail works were produced by creating various new ways of expression by grafting UV gel and all sorts of nail materials offered a lot by nail shops. In the future, the characteristics of folk art of different countries should be investigated in addition to zhostovo, and the practical modernization of traditional arts and crafts should be attempted to extend the sphere of creative nail art.
