Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the cognitions of learners who is learning or have learned English learning through a mobile equipment (i.e., mobile phone, tablet PC, or PMP) regarding what functions of mobile learning they prefer, how they think about pros and cons about mobile learning, and what their motivations and why they use mobile equipment during English learning. A total of 84 who are fourth graders of elementary school in K area participated in the study. All of the participants attended the survey and 30 of them interviewed about 5-minute, which is required to answer the 8questions about mobile learning. The survey was conducted for two weeks. To analyze cognitions of learners, the survey consists of 3kinds of items. The first item for what functions they prefer most consists of 13 questions, the second item which what the pros and cons about mobile learning they think consists of 18 questions, and the last item regarding why they use mobile equipment during English learning and what the motivation they have consists of 17questions.
The study results showed that the participants prefer to ‘reconfirming the missing vocabulary’function. It seems to be because they can learn vocabulary themselves without any assistance from teacher or their parents, whenever they want, the participants can find that vocabularies which they missed, also they can feel less nervous when they take a word test because of no eyes on them. In the second item with motivations from mobile learning, the best question was ‘it is easy to learn personally’. the reason why they think so, when they learn English through mobile equipment, they feel much easier than they learn from school or private educational institute. Lastly, the merit from mobile learning was ‘speed’, they can control the learning speed in their learning applications. If a learner who is poor at reading sentences through mobile application, she (or he) can listen the reading part by controling the speed. The other hand, ‘difficulty about concurrency’ was the best question in the demerits items from mobile learning. It seems to be difficult to access another application or program, when they are accessing the learning program. Especially they feel difficult from them, when they want to know about words or sentences during accessing the learning program.
Though this study, most of leaners are using or have used the mobile equipment, when they learn English learning. So it is anticipated to be develop the mobile learning program and applications for the future.
