- Abstract
- Buoma(royal son-in-law) refers to the husband of a princess who married a royal woman. The term which originated from the title of the Chinese public office, the Buoma was used until in Koryo and Chosun.
In Koryo Dynasty, the royal family strengthen its solidarity through practising endogamy. However, due to the decrease in the number of king’s sons, Buoma succeeded to the throne from King Gwangjong to King Mokjong.
Since King Hyeonjong became a king after King Moonjong, royal son-in-laws lost the right to the throne and were reduced to a subject of respect as members of royal family by the implementation of investiture with the titles of nobility. Until the end of Koryo Dynasty, the marriages of princesses were the endogamy within the royal family.
In the Chosun Dynasty, the Buoma was only a son of a common nobleman, not a royal family any more, whose stature ended up being reduced beyond comparison with that of the Koryo Dynasty. The selection criteria for the Buoma varied depending on the personality of the royal daughter’s to be father-in-law, the relationship with the king, the political situation and so on.
Koryo sealed the royal family with duke, marquis, and counts, and gave Marquis to the princes, gave Conuts to Buomas, and Marquis to the father-in-laws, which were not inherited.
During the Chosun Dynasty, the 'investiture with the titles of nobility ' system for the 26th year of King Sejong was abolished, and after King Seongjong's reign, government posts were granted below the commandant.
King's daughter’s-Buoma’s sons, were able to take exams and enter government service. They were given the government posts of “Donnyeongbu”.
Buma’s remarriage had not been allowed since the early Chosun Dynasty because of his reponsibility to hold a merorial service for his dead wife as a princess.
This paper tried to figure out the process of changing the status of the Buoma by comparing the condition of the Buoma during the Koryo and Chosun.
