Abstract
The objective of this study is to understand the effects of negative thoughts changing group career counseling program on the negative automatic thoughts of students with intellectual disabilities, and also to suggest the future direction of career education in the special education site. To achieve the objective of this study, the goals were set up as follows.
First, are there any effects of negative thoughts changing group career counseling program on the change in negative automatic thoughts of students with intellectual disabilities?
Second, how are the processes of change in negative automatic thoughts of students with intellectual disabilities through the negative thoughts changing group career counseling program?
To solve these research questions, out of special middle and high schools located in J province, total four students diagnosed with intellectual disabilities were selected as research subjects. The independent variable is the ‘Nailro narsha-negative thoughts changing' program developed by Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training(KRVIT) in 2016 while the dependent variable is the negative automatic thoughts. In order to measure the negative automatic thoughts, the Korean Children's Automatic Thoughts Scale(K-CATS) was used as a measuring tool. Total ten sessions of negative thoughts changing group career counseling program were performed for seven weeks. On top of understanding the change in negative automatic thoughts through the quantitative analysis, the processes of change in the negative automatic thoughts of the students were examined by qualitatively analyzing the students' thoughts on activities, video materials, learning outcomes, and interview with the teacher in charge. The results are as follows.
First, in the comparison of pre/post tests after conducting the negative thoughts-changing group career counseling program, there were significant changes in the negative automatic thoughts.
Second, as the session of the negative thoughts changing group career counseling program was progressed more, the students showed some changes in the attitude to class participation, reduced frequency of using aggressive language, decrease of unpredicted/problematic behaviors, and the expression of expectancy in the next session, which shows the positive effects on the change in negative automatic thoughts.
Like this, the negative thoughts changing group career counseling program was significant on the change in negative automatic thoughts of students with intellectual disabilities, which implies the necessity of career counseling for the psychological support for students with intellectual disabilities. And based on it, the special education site should put efforts to provide the career education to students with intellectual disabilities, so that they could set up their future goals and plans and systematically put efforts into their careers.
