This study aims at enhancing the communicative competence of Business Korean learners by suggesting the effective method for teaching title terms of address and reference. For the purpose, this paper reviews the system and selection principle of Korean title terms of address and reference, and analyzes Business Korean textbooks to figure out what’s the problem of the subject in the education field.
It is well-known that Korean terms of address and reference are quite complex and choosy. Particularly, Business Korean learners complain of difficulty to use appropriately title terms of address and reference in their life at work because they are more complicated than others.
In this regard, it is important to teach proper title terms of address and reference to Business Korean learners in order to build the favorable personal relationship as well as to do business through the fluent communication. Existing Business Korean textbooks, however, neither embody the systematic teaching method nor include a variety of title terms of address and reference which are actually being used in the real communicative situation.
Thus this paper proposes to embed an independent unit(lesson) for the title terms of address and reference in the Business Korean textbook as an improvement measure. Along with a sample unit, detail contents of the unit are suggested as follows: first, it is necessary to provide a variety of title terms of address and reference in the dialogue passages which reflect the real communicative situation in the office. Second, the rule to choose proper terms of address and reference should be added. Third, the agreement with honorific expressions also needs to be taught in the grammar part or exercise activity. Finally, culture education is required to understand the unique organization culture of Korean companies.
