Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the middle school students' motivation, self-confidence and attitude toward English learning in a team-teaching class with a native English teacher by using game during the Free Semester. The study was conducted by 1st grade students who joined the English club in the Free Semester at a middle school in Gwangju. The classes were conducted twice a week for 4 weeks from September 26 to October 24. In order to measure the participants' motivation, self-confidence and attitude toward English learning during the Free Semester, 25 students were asked to fill out a questionnaire on the first day of the class. The survey was made up of 30 statements that the students had to respond to. In the class, the participant students played the games based on an certain topic with a native English teacher. After the experiment, the students were asked to fill out a post questionnaire. The pre- and post- questionnaire items were the same. The collected data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics and paired samples t-tests.
The study results are as follows:
First, students' motivation toward English learning improved statistically. By authentic conversation with a native English teacher, students realized the importance of studying English for communication. Second, there were no statistically significant changes in the students' English learning self-confidence. There were only 25 students for this study and short period of experimental time might have small effect on the result. Students were not allowed to speak Korean in the classroom and they might be pressurized about it. Next, the students demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in their English learning attitude. Thorough games, team work was essential and students had opportunities to interact with each other in the class. It helped students to participate in the class actively.
