Abstract
The purpose of this study is to compare the curriculums of higher music education institutions such as Korea National University of Arts in Korea, Conservatoire National Superior of Music and Dance of Paris, and New England Conservatory in the United States. For this purpose, the master’s course of violin was researched among these schools’ curriculums. This research also involved their entry requirements, curriculums and requirements for degree acquisition. In addition, it also described the concepts of conservatory and music college, which are higher music education institutions, and examined the history of higher music education institutions.
The methods for achieving the purpose of this study were as follows. First, previous studies were considered through literature reviews. Second, the internet data provided by their websites were collected and analyzed. Third, online interviews were conducted on the graduates through telephone and e-mail to gather the data on the requirements for degree acquisition. Fourth, their curriculums were compared and analyzed based on the collected information.
The results of this study were as follows.
First, there were differences in the purpose of establishing the conservatories and music colleges in each country, and the contents of education were also different.
Second, the names of master’s degrees were different in each conservatory, but the entry requirements were similar.
Third, common practice classes and orchestra classes were regarded as very important and these classes were set as required courses, but other courses differed from school to school.
Fourth, the conservatories in the United States and France were often awarded degrees by collaborating with other universities in each city.
Fifth, the courses after the master’s degree and the name of degrees varied from school to school, and thus their names were not unified.
It is expected that this study, which dealt with the entry requirements and curriculums of the master’s degrees and the present status of degree acquisition in the three conservatories, will be a useful basic data for students who plan to enter the master’s course.
