- Abstract
- This study analyzes imperialism and gender as deeply related issues in A Gesture Life by Chang-Lae Lee. A Gesture Life suggests that race and gender are inextricably related issues through Hata's relationships with three female characters, Kkutaeh, Sunny, and Mary Burns. The chapter Ⅱ examines Hata’s Japanese imperialism and masculinity focusing on his relationship with Kkutaeh. Then I critically discuss Hata’s racial prejudice and patriarchal attitude that become visible in his relationship with Sunny. The chapter Ⅳdemonstrates that Hata's relationship with Mary Burns, a white woman, suggests that he has internalized white supremacy and orientalism. In conclusion, the three female characters expose Hata's racial and gender ideology by forming differently expressed power relationships with him.
