Development of art education program using
fairy tale illustrations to improve the visual literacy

This is the era of communication with various visual media. The visual environment unconsciously makes great influences on our idea and viewpoints and children are not the exception. Therefore, it is necessary to make a considerate approach to an appropriate education for images so that children can adapt well to visual environment. Based on the education, children may learn visual culture and raise visual literacy which means the ability to read and write visually. This is the most important purpose of modern art education.
In this research, tale illustration is the main topic to improve visual literacy to communicate with visual images. Children may recognize the visual elements and learn their implications and how to communicate visually by experiencing the expression technics in tale illustration. With these experiences, they can express their intention in their own arts. It would be the developing process of art education program for them to communicate visually.
Tale illustration may have similar trends with modern arts and its expression methods and materials are various. Therefore, it would be the valuable art education materials for children by stimulating visually.
In chapter Ⅰ, it includes the necessity and purpose of this research. In chapter Ⅱ, it investigates the concept and element of visual literacy, significance of it as the art education and visual literacy in terms of art education. In chapter Ⅲ, it focuses on concept, characteristics of tale illustration and categorizes seven methods among various tale illustration techniques for children to work easily: collage, stamping, blur, scratch, engraving, marbling and clay. With these theoretical background, it concludes that the tale illustration is valuable in the aspect of art education. In chapter Ⅳ, it develops the art education program model with tale illustrations.
The program is developed like below;
First, children may understand the visual expression and improve their visual recognition.
Second, children may express their emotions into tale illustration and improve visual communication.
Third, children may use various expression techniques and improve their creativity and confidence.
Fourth, children may raise the interests on tale illustration. It is a very considerable effect.
In contemporary society, the visual literacy is the inevitable issue in art education. Tale illustration may be the excellent art education tool to children because it has the similar trend with modern arts and shows various expression techniques and materials. Therefore, various art education programs should be developed in order to induce children’s participations. This programs is purposed to improve children’s communication by using visual images in art education in future.
