Comparative Analysis of Visual Materials in Print and Braille English Textbooks for Elementary Students

The purpose of this study was to compare the visual materials in the fifth-grade and sixth-grade regular print English textbook with those in the fifth-grade and sixth-grade braille English textbook. The regular print English textbook was authored by Lee et al. and published at Daekyo; the braille English textbook was transcribed in the Braille Library of Taegu University. The fifth-grade regular print English textbook presented a total of 996 visual materials, including 79(7.9%) photos, 887(89.1%) drawings and 30(3.0%) other visual materials. The sixth-grade regular print English textbook presented a total of 882 visual materials, including 84(9.5%) photos, 747(84.7%) drawings and 51(5.8%) other visual materials. In terms of the functions of the visual materials for teaching English, the fifth-grade textbook consisted of 738(74.1%) imperative, 107(10.7%) auxiliary and 151(15.2%) decorative materials. The sixth-grade textbook consisted of 607(68.8%) imperative, 122(13.8%) auxiliary and 153(17.4%) decorative materials. The braille transcription patterns of the visual materials in fifth-grade were as follows: complete transcription 11(1.1%), modifications 589(59.2%) and omissions 396(39.7%). The braille transcription patterns of the visual materials in sixth-grade were as follows: complete transcription 18(2.0%), modifications 438(49.6%) and omissions 426(48.4%). The braille transcription patterns of the visual materials in fifth-grade in terms of their function revealed that, for the 5 imperative materials, only 0.7% were completely transcribed, 73.2% modified and 26.1% omitted; that most of the auxiliary materials and decorative materials were omitted. In case of the sixth-grade braille transcription patterns of the visual materials, the result was almost the same as the fifth-grade.
