Abstract
This study looked at real, detailed difficulties of special education Paraprofessionals as support personnel for special education at the educational field which were suffered from the school for students with intellectual disabilities, and then attempted to deduce its improvement. 8 special education Paraprofessionals participated in-depth interviews by semi-structured questionnaires in this research. About 30 minutes for interviews were taken in average, and interview contents were divided into 3 big categories. As a result of research, there were mental conflicts such like situations of doing first-aid settlements rather than educational interventions in all kinds of students’ behavioral problems in relation with difficulties in supporting personal demands, making inquires about even small things without autonomy of the teacher in charge, toilet training of students having large builds and different gender, students accompanying with sex-related behavioral problems, and supports by focussing on duties. Regarding difficulties in supporting teaching-learning activities, there were many issues such as no professionalism on students’ behavioral problems and educational treatments, absence of prior role directions, different demands on instructional methods by the teacher in charge, students’ behavioral changes according to alterations of learning environment, and working environment of not having personal free time. Also, difficulties in supporting problematic behaviors appeared as mental∙physical ones which made large, small wounds and accidental situations because appropriate knowledge on problematic behaviors and techniques were insufficient. In connection with improvement requirements, preparing consistent guidance plan among 3 parties (Teacher, Paraprofessionals, Parent), arranging specific work guidelines, revitalizing conference and advisory body to do cooperative communication, expanding field-centered training, and doing actual guarantee on wounds etc. could be suggested.
