Study on Value and Significance of Five-sences Art
Education to Improve Emotional Intelligence

Today, children living in this society that focuses only on one’s academic background are struggling to survive an adolescent period in the midst of the standardized cramming system of education and overheated competition for university entrance, and that consequently leads to the children’s even severer mental stress. As for the adolescents’ mental stress, since it can develop into wrong events such as not only deviation and/or social crimes which the adolescents would use as ways to express their desires but also mental diseases, it is urgent to prepare a method that would approach such problems from educational angles. Children experience physical, emotional and social developments in the adolescent period and therefore, if we want to help them have right balanced personalities, emotional education to teach not the brain but the heart which is, in other words, sensibility education, should be valued, and art is considered to be the most effective method to carry out such education than other subjects are.
Based on what it had learned from the review on relevant references, this study conducted theoretical discussion on value and educational significance of this particular way to help improvement of children’s emotional intelligence during their adolescent period which is the five-sense art education and then offered an art program that would use five senses to develop the adolescents’ emotional intelligence.
The program presented by the study encourages children to express their five-sense elements, which they have experienced in surrounding nature outside classrooms, in various ways and eventually contributes both to the improvement of emotional intelligence and establishment of adolescents’ egos, and expected effects of the program are summarized as follows.
1. In the program, children actively work with their five senses.
2. The program effectively improves and cultivates emotional intelligence of children in their adolescent period.
3. Children willingly join the program as active participants of a sense of independence.
4. As a teaching and learning method to experience nature, the program carries out art education even in everyday surroundings but not always in classrooms or artificial places.
5. The program can be easily integrated with other subjects.

As one of the ways to improve emotional intelligence, the five-sense art program pursues educational value of use of five senses and as children experience surrounding ‘nature’ with their five senses and express them only freely, they can improve and cultivate emotional intelligence. As long as we believe that our ultimate goal of education is the establishment of human’s right personality and positive ego but not this development of intelligence quotient and left brain and that art plays an important role in developing emotional intelligence, this study suggests that the cultivation of emotional intelligence and five-sense art education to achieve the emotional intelligence development should be considered the true educational method.
