Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception of English tense by Korean middle school students who learned the phonology and morphology of English inflectional suffixes. Specifically, this study attempted to answer these three questions: first, are there any meaningful differences before and after listening training of the third person singular present tense(-s) and regulated past tense(-ed)?; second, would temporal adverbs or adverbial phrases affect their distinction of present and past?; third, would the types of inflection affect on their distinction of present and past?
Pre- and post- tests were carried by in the way the students checked the time (present or past) after they heard English sentences. Meanwhile, they were taught how tense is realized in English, focusing on the allomorphic variation of the tense markers.
The results show that 1) the listening training of the inflectional suffixes gave rise to meaningful improvement on their distinction between the present and past in the experiment group; 2) temporal adverbs or adverb phrases facilitated their perception of time in both experimental and control groups. However, the experimental group showed significant improvement even when there were no temporal adverbs or adverb phrases; 3) Among the three types of inflection (no inflection, regular inflection, and irregular inflection), irregular inflection showed the greatest improvement while regular inflection made the biggest difference between the experimental and the control groups.
