Abstract
This study is designed to find out the effects of weak form and strong form pronunciation on middle school and high school student’s English pronunciation skills. For the purpose, 12 strong vs. weak (or full vs. reduced) vowel pairs and the target words containing the vowels were selected. Before they are taught of the difference between strong vs. weak forms, 6 students went through pre-test, where they read sentences containing target words. They were taught how content and function words differ from each other in terms of their pronunciations for 4 weeks (8 classes), post-test was carried out in the same way the pre-test was. Their recordings were segmented and measured focusing on the vowel quality and quantity (F1, F2, and duration), using Praat. The results show that teaching affected the students’ pronunciation of strong vs. weak forms. In other words, they differentiated strong vs. weak vowels in the post-test regarding the quality of vowel as well as the quantity, which they did not in the pre-test.
