- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to analyze English Inversion Construction, especially focused on Negative Inversion Construction. English Inversion normally occurs when a syntactically long and complex subject bears new information. (Birner, 1995) Negative inversion has a entirely different movement : a negative expression is fronted and subject-auxiliary inversion occurs. This is an exceptional phenomenon to the English word order convention of subjects when it precedes their corresponding verbs. A similar kind of inversion is also involved in negative sentences.
The Negation sentences can be divided into two types. One is sentential negation and the other is constituent negation. In sentential negation, the preposed negative element triggers the inversion while in the constituent negation, it does not.
This study is based on the data of BNC and ICE_GB called Corpus. This thesis classified the Negative Inversions in English into Obligatory Negative Inversion, Optional Negative Inversion, and No Negative Inversion.
With this classification, learners who want to understand the Inversion Construction will help to get the basic structure and properties of Negative Inversion in English : This study will help them to learn aspect of pragmatics and syntactics. And also will be effective to interpret Negative Inversion sentences in literature.
This thesis has four chapters.
Chapter Ⅱ will explain foundational concept of word order and Inversion Construction. Also it will shows basic point such as the part of pragmatics and semantic concept.
Chapter Ⅲ will explain how the Negative Inversion occurs in English sentences. Moreover, it will explain the characteristic properties of Negation Inversion Construction. After that, it will make clear the difference between sentential and constituent negation. As Rizzi(1997) pointed out, in sentential negation and constituent negation, the preposed negative elements have different landing sites. In other words, in sentential negation where the inversion occurs, the negative phrase transfers to the Spec of FocP, while in constituent negation where the inversion does not occur, the negative phrase transfers to the Spec of Top P.
Subsequently, chapter Ⅲ shows the types of Negative Inversions that is researched with base of BNC and ICE_GB and will classify them into Obligatory Negative Inversion, Optional Negative Inversion, and No Negative Inversion. With these classified sentences, it will explain what the meanings of the Negative Inversion are and How the usages of Negative Inversion work in a real life.
Lastly in Chapter Ⅲ, There is a study based on the study of Negative Inversion with references in High school’s English book. Researches of usage of Negative Inversion Construction and The frequency of Negative Inversion show that How many sentence are used in the reading section of English book. Addition is the reason why English book has few Negative inversion sentences.
Finally, chapter Ⅳ summarizes the several important parts discussed in
the previous chapters and places to the conclusions.
