- Abstract
- English articles could be a huge challenge for foreigners learning English. First of all, English and Korean are quite different in their structures. There are no articles found in the Korean language. Therefore, there is an insufficient amount of researches studying the English articles in Korea. The fact that Korean grammar uses demonstrative adjectives and quantifiers as a direct substitute to the articles in English arouses more confusion among Koreans.
Therefore, this paper is to recognize the common mistakes English learners make while using English articles and to provide helpful tips for those who teach the English articles on the site.
In the beginning, the necessity of educating the English articles is mentioned after showing that many English learners make errors regarding the articles. This paper will categorize the type of articles in three different ways, a definitive article, the, an indefinitive one, a and an. There is also a zero form article. The main body of the paper will discuss how Jespersen and Qurik et al. categorized the articles. Then, the paper will also cover the usage of the articles by studying the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic approaches.
There are three clear points to determine the usage of the articles. First, one has to determine if the nouns being used are countable. The syntactic approach is used if one knows the type of a noun used. Secondly, a noun including an article could be referred to a certain sentence or a circumstance. In this case, one can apply a pragmatic approach. If a noun refers to a certain meaning, one uses definitive article and if not, indefinitive article should be used. Lastly, a generic method is used when the articles represent the whole group.
There are many exceptions using the articles and it is difficult to address a clear usage of it. This paper will conclude with the observation of different usages of the articles and exceptional circumstances where the articles are used to help readers to understand the grammatical challenges one faces while using the articles.
