An Analysis of the Cultural Contents in the First Grade in Middle School English Textbooks :
Based on the 2009 Revised Curriculum

The purpose of this study was to analyze the cultural contents of English textbooks (Grade 7) according to the 2009 revised middle school curriculum and through surveying students' awareness of teaching culture and their needs analysis. Most of cultural contents are related in the reading parts and culture corner section of the textbooks, two criteria are used in order to analyze the 3textbooks: nineteen topics suggested in the 2009 revised curriculum and five cultural backgrounds by Lado. The five cultural backgrounds are follows: general culture, Korean culture, English-speaking culture, non-English speaking culture and comparison culture.
The surveys for students consisted of several questionnaires to students' awareness of culture education, how they were learned culture in class, what students want to learn. The results obtained from this study are as follows: first, the number 3, 5, 6 and number 1 topics are presented highest in reading part and number 8 appears most frequently in culture corner section. However number 15, 16, 17, 19 are never composed of 3 textbooks, so it needs to be considered.
Second, in the background analysis English cultural element, it was founded that general culture was the highest among other culture area in the criteria the five cultural backgrounds.
On the other hand, English-speaking culture and non-English-speaking culture are covered in sufficiently. In contrast, comparison culture appears the most in culture corner section. Both of criteria are needed to add more about Korean culture and non-English-speaking culture.
Third, a questionnaires survey to students' awareness of culture education was founded that most of students perceived lack of cultural education. also English culture education is conducted mainly through English textbooks and teachers' lesson at school. Therefore culture should be fully reflected in the English textbooks and it is necessary to reflected students' needs.
