A Study on Narrative of Kang Hong Rib -Focusing on the Gangro-jeon, General Kim-jeon and Chaekjoong-illok -

This study speculated on literature that describes Kang Hong-Lib, who led the Chosun army in Joseon as well as the Ming Allied Force, in combination with the neutral diplomatic policy of Gwanghaegun from the late 16th century to the early 17th century when the Ming Dynasty was replaced by the Qing. The motivation for this study was a desire to supplement the limited existing studies on Kang Hong-Lib. ｢General Kim-jeon｣, ｢Gangro-jeon｣ and 『Chaekjoong-illok』 contain evaluations of him. These three works are different genres that each evaluate Kang Hong-Lib. Therefore, this study compared the evaluations of Kang Hong-Lib shown in each work, the characteristics of each literary work and their narrative structures. First of all, ｢General Kim-jeon｣ criticized Kim Eung-Ha who participated in the Simha battle together with Kang Hong-Lib as a subordinate. It is a sort of bibliography consisting of recognition of achievement and dispute from a third-person view. This narrative mainly covers Kim Eung-Ha, and there is only a short description of Kang Hong-Lib. However, it does introduce Kang Hong-Lib even though the amount on him is not great. As Kang Hong-Lib, who had an opposite image to the hero of the work, is introduced, the hero is highlighted more. Also, there is a limited amount of narration on Kim Eung-Ha and Kang Hong-Lib with regards to the Simha Battle. Next, this study focused on ｢Gangro-jeon｣. It portrays Kang Hong-Lib in a negative light while describing his entire life. It is a genre having the characteristics of a narrative. To speculate on this work, it has the general components of a narrative although it is a type of Jeongye novel. However, to compare it with ｢General Kim-jeon｣, the biggest difference is that ｢Gangro-jeon｣ gives focus to Kang Hong-Lib. So, the time is extended in comparison with the time frame for ｢General Kim-jeon｣. As well, it is seen that time is reversed due to the parallel-narrative structure in ｢Gangro-jeon｣. Such a phenomenon appears when the author knows the whole story and the internal views of the hero and narrates from the perspective of an omniscient-author. Finally, 『Chaekjoong-illok』 favors Kang Hong-Lib who was evaluated as negative in the first two stories mentioned. It was written by Lee Min-Hwan who was in the same situation as the author of ｢Gangro-jeon｣. However, the author evaluated Kang Hong-Lib positively unlike the author of ｢Gangro-jeon｣. This study takes the form of a journal style. Although this style has the disadvantage of showing comprehensive information, it is characterized by its realistic and objective delivery of events. The author used a diary writing style in this story to show his favor for Kang Hong-Lib. This study compared what is commonly described in ｢Gangro-jeon｣ and examined Kang Hong-Lib's mediating role which was mainly dealt with in 『Chaekjoong-illok』. As a result, this study discovered that the three narratives describe Kang Hong-Lib differently and each author used different genres to show their different descriptive intent.
