Abstract
Teacher's role and relationship with children are very important for children who will shoulder the future of all ages and cultures. If children have the positive images about and a close relationship with teacher, effectiveness of education will increase more. Picture books are what children can easily access and let them embody about things and people, easily. Therefore if children can often come into contact with teachers' images in picture books, they can not only remember the images for a long time but also have positive or negative preconceived ideas. So, picture books play an important role in children shaping cognition for a teacher.
This study aims to analyze teachers' images depicted in Korean and American, English picture books and to find out the desirable teacher image. For this, this study compares and analyzes cultural similarities and differences for their images described in 32 picture books. Picture books of Korean culture described teachers as scary, threatening and authoritative images. And picture books of American, English showed teachers as kind, friendly and warmhearted images. In the teaching form, Korean teachers teach mostly student in one-sided cramming method of teaching. While American, English teachers were not only near students or surround by students freely but also at the level of their eyes, primary. On the other hand, picture books of the two cultures described teachers as being who student can depend on and be in the care of instead of their parents in common. Also, teachers of the two cultures had something in common in doing a role as a learning managers.
This study suggests that desirable teachers should be people who students can easily become close to and they can rely on in care like their parants' concern. Also, teachers must be able to give attention to students' situation and respect their students' personalities and make their students be motivated to use their abilities. And teacher will have to avoid the images that can be showed to students as scary, authoritative things. Furthermore, if desirable teachers' images and teaching methods that American, English cultures have like as this study showed are added to English education in Korea, learning English in Korea will be more effective and positive results.
