- Abstract
- This study reveals the satisfaction level of middle school students with class of native English-speaking teachers, what opinions they have, and what more effective measurers may be. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, a survey was administered to Gwangju middle school students. Here are the findings.
First, in classes with native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) in junior high school, students generally enjoyed the classes with NESTs because the classes are fun and interesting.
Second, learners still recognized that English is the language of the USA. Asked why they prefer American teachers, they answered that Americans speak English even though it is spoken in Australia, Canada, England, and the Philippines. It seems that learners think America is the only foreign country, and they do not have much knowledge of other countries.
Third, there are many students who think that non-active communication during class is a disadvantage. It can be said that students are generally satisfied with classes with NESTs, and they are curious about other countries' cultures. To enhance English programs, it would be advantageous to select and assign teachers appropriately and allow students to experience different countries' cultures. In addition, for a better understanding, NESTs should be more careful of intonation and speaking speed, and for lower-level class, Korean teachers and native English teachers should collaborate to reduce the fear of students during communication to make an effective class.
