Abstract
The aim of this study is to introduce and classify the types of passive constructions.
In the English language, the passive voice is used when focusing on the person or thing affected by an action. And the passive voice is able to deliver more clearly the speaker's intention than the active voice in discourse.
As it is frequently used in the discourse, many linguists have studied the passive voice. Even though the study of the passive voice is being performed from traditional grammar to transformational grammar in several aspects, there are still a lot of problems. One of the problems is that the understanding of the passive voice is limited. Generally, the passive is referred to a grammatical construction. The object of an active sentence appears as the subject of a sentence with passive. The subject of a passive sentence typically denotes the recipient of the action rather than the performer. The usual form of the passive uses the auxiliary verb 'be' together with the past participle[p.p.] of the main verb. For example, in school grammar, many educators put teaching typical form and the arrangement of words before explaining characteristics that the passive has and situations where it is used. Also there are many other forms besides the form 「be + p.p + by agent」. For example, some structures that take the form of「be + pp」 don't have the meaning of passive. Other structures that don't take the form 「be + p.p.」, however, signify the meaning of the passive.
There have been many problems in explaining the passive structure in the English form of the passive verb phrase. This leads to confusion about structures which do not correspond to the right form. Educators and learners therefore have difficulty teaching and learning the passive perfectly.
As mentioned earlier, there are various types of passive constructions that have their own features. Also, many linguists have mentioned that the meaning of the passive is different from that of the active in their studies. That is that the passive is not derived from the active. And each structure has a different deep structure. According to this point, the passive and the active don't have a structure that has a one-to-one correspondence. Therefore, it is reasonable to analyze the passive by an independent type. Although, there are a lot of studies for this, the types of passive aren’t classified perfectly in their studies. So the aim of this study is to classify the types of passive by syntactic based on the findings of many linguists. And the types are organized into 19 different types.
Chapter Ⅰ describes the aim of this study and introduces the definition of the passive. Chapter Ⅱ describes the characters of the passive structure. Chapter Ⅲ classifies and describes the types of the passive are classified by syntactic on the basis of many linguists. Chapter Ⅳ describes the summary of this study.
With this, the understanding of the passive constructions will be good for student by recognizing the various forms of the passive. Furthermore, to make it easier to reach practical use, the more efficient teaching methods should be suggested than some ways how the learner gets learned by rot.
