시트콤 'Friends'에 나타난 Grice의 격률과 유머 분석

Abstract

H. Paul Grice, a famous philosopher of language, told that people’s conversation is based on a shared cooperative principle. When people communicate with others, speakers and listeners speak cooperatively to keep the purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which they are engaged. Therefore, people try to contribute meaningful and productive utterances to further the conversation and it is called the cooperation principle of conversation. The cooperation principle is divided into four maxims; The Maxim of Quality, Quantity, Relative and Manner. These maxims are called Grice‘s Maxims and they describe specific rational principles observed by people who obey the cooperative principle. It indicates that if people violate this principle, it can cause difficulty in conversation. The purpose of this study is to explore how the violations of Grice’s maxims are related to humors.
