Choi-Bu was well-known as one of the scholars who joined in with the revision and extension of a new edition of the 『Dongguktonggam』 and was martyred because of his resistance against the despotism of Yonsangun. Choe drifted about after he came from Jeju Island and recorded his travels south and north of the Yangtze in 『Pyohaerok』 to show different viewpoints of our scholastic mind and civilization.
He gave his opinion of Confucianism while drifting around in China and in returning home, and he emphasized that Chosun is a country which follows the ideas of Confucianism in politics such as loyalty to kings and fidelity to parents.
This shows his infinite pride in Chosun and that Chosun has the views of a legitimate nation which follows historical context going back to Shilla, Baekje, and Goguryo. Also he expressed that Chosun has an independent attitude of choosing national interest for the nation while submitting to China based on the consciousness of Salim.
Such an attitude is similar to that of Hungu who pursued a policy of enhancing the wealth and military strength of the country.
This was intended to show pride that we could and would control our destiny ourselves even while the Chosun Dynasty was manipulated by external powers.
It is concluded that the scholastic mind and peculiar perceptions of the civilization of Chosun presented in 『Pyohaerok』 by Choe Pu were affected by the nature of the transition period of Salim at that time.
