Abstract
This study aimed to deal with a variety of media in visual culture environment and prepare an effective method of learning by developing and applying an art education program that utilizes new media art targeting high school freshmen who are interested in.
Modern society is changing rapidly due to the development of new media and all generations receive a stream of information of visual culture through the interface thanks to the vitalization of web. Development of new media and advent of web 2.0 have brought a great change to the art in our times. Appearance of media art enables artists to create a new artistic presentation and embarks on a new chapter in appreciation by exciting a new response named ‘Participation and Communication’ for audience at the same time.
Meanwhile, however, digital information-oriented age on the basis new media is keeping various untouched features of post-industrial society. Things we should pay special attention among them is the fact that it is basically accompanying commercialism and thorough economic logics, which is exposing a negative aspect as much as positive one. Therefore, art education shall come up to the learners living in such society as a new form of education.
To enable the youth living in a new environment of visual culture to distinguish visual culture and form aesthetic discernment, a new education shall be researched. And efforts for forming a new aesthetic experience by cultivating esthetical experience of students who are exposed to user-centered visual culture manufacturing environment shall also be made. Accordingly, the researcher of this study became to recognize the necessity of art education that utilizes media art.
While looking into the theoretical consideration of the concept and significance as well as feature and the type of media art, this study also investigated high school textbooks, current condition of teachers’ teaching and learners’ study for the purpose of inquiring into the current state of utilizing media art in high schools. As a result of research, this study revealed that art education that utilizes media art is need and development of appropriate program is exigent.
This program is composed of ‘Understanding of Media Art’, ‘Utilizing Digital Painting’, ‘Utilizing Web Art’ and ‘Utilizing Installation’, and ‘Digital Painting’ and ‘Digital Collage’ that utilized Storytelling’ were developed from ‘Utilizing Digital Painting’ which is a type of media art. Program were developed from ‘Utilizing Web Art’ to ‘Web Portrait’ and ‘Digital Media Installation Appreciation Experience’ from ‘Utilizing Media Installation’ respectively.
The researcher of this study suggested an activation plan and its educational effect through the program. As a result of the research of this study, educational effects obtainable through the program that utilized media art are as follows.
First, learners can be able to understand change of arts according to the development of a new technology and extend the system of knowledge experience in respect of new arts as a participant.
Second, learners can be able to understand new plastic arts through the activity of expression that used new media and improve creative artistic abilities.
Third, learners can be able to access a variety of learning materials by utilizing web and media that are easy to access in ordinary times and improve self-directed learning as they collect and recast information by themselves.
Fourth, learners can their interest in the art subject through esthetics experience and playful experience that interaction is strengthened.
Art education program that utilizes media art on the assumption ‘The New Needs of the Times’ and ‘Participation and Communication’ is expected to be an art education which is connected to the life of learners. In addition, through this program, learners can be able to understand and be accustomed to a new environment, that is to say a new world of arts, and grow up to a leader who leads the times. Therefore, in a sense that this program is education that is learner-driven and integrated education, it is expected to become an alternative model in the qualitative aspect of art subject. The program is expected to be utilized as a program that is of help in development of art education in the future.
