Abstract
The needs of parent education has increased to support difficulties experienced by parents of children with disabilities. The purpose of this study is to analyze the current research trends in academic journals, subjects of research, methods of research and data collection, research topics and dependents variables, and independents variables. this study analyzes on 47 research papers related parent education of children with disabilities published in Korea from 2000 to 2012. This study aims to provide a desirable and proper parent eduction by exploring the methods needed for parent education.
This study investigates National Research Foundation of Korea, which include children between 3 and 17 years old in free education and compulsory education.
The followings are the result of the analysis.
First, in research trend in academic journals, the most research papers were special education field, published actively from 2004.
Second, while the most researched topics of papers were behavioral disorders followed by developmental delay and mental retardation, the area of visual impairments, physical disabilities and hearing impairment takes relatively little, even nothing for learning disabilities.
Classifying subjects into children and parents, for children, the most research papers were related infant and early children and elementary children. In contrast, the research papers related middle and high school students and children in transition period were not many. Also, for parents, research papers for mothers accounted for the largest portion. But because of mothers taking jobs and increasing dual-income family, family, where grandparents take on parenting and education for children as well as parents has increased. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the subjects for parent education program.
Third, regarding studies on research type and method of data collection, the frequency of studies used experimental study and descriptive study was almost same. In experimental study, pretest-posttest control group design was used the most frequently followed by single-subject designs and The one-group pretest-posttest design. In descriptive study, content analysis and survey research was used the most frequently.
Fourth, regarding research topics and dependents variables, parents` demands and parent education program and fact finding survey were mostly studied in survey research. It seems that research of parents` demands and survey for current condition are basic in planning parent education programs. In experimental study, in children’s side, studies on children’s communication skills and language abilities and in parents side, studies on parenting stress were mostly researched. Further study remains to be investigated on parental self-efficacy.
Fifth, in the contents of intervention in experimental study, the most studies were focused on cognitive theory followed by behaviorism. But now that problem behavior of children with disabilities is recognized by ecological perspective, support measures following this are necessary. So, Further study also needs to be conducted on ecological perspective.
