Teaching Methods for Korean Traditional Music Using Arts PROPEL
- Centering on Music Textbooks for Secondary Schools -

Arts POPEL is a research project in which a Harvard project team, pubic schools in Pittsburgh and the Institute of Education Evaluation joined together with supports from departments of art and humanities in Rockefeller Foundation in 1985.
The traditional teaching has focused on simple delivery and memorizing of knowledge regarding students as passive objects. However, it is hard to create effective textbooks and train teachers and active leaders who can adjust to this rapidly chaing society in this way.
Therefore, we need cognitive education which considers students as the objects of learning and helps them to have creative ability with which they can solve the present problems wisely.
For art education, a cognitive approach is needed. So, Arts POPEL is designed to create teaching and evaluating methods which are faithful to learning and growth of students through music, art and creative writing programs.
It was found that effective music education can be achieved when students play music themselves, make music through their own activities, appreciate songs or musical performance differently and reflect them verbally or non-verbally. That is, the most effective learning in music education occurs when creation, perception and reflection are integrated.
First, it is expected that performing skills of the subjects are improved when they understand musical elements or expressions through musical thinking.
When they record musical elements themselves and discuss how to express what they feel, their musical creativity can be enhanced. They can have confidence in performing music or singing when they identify the entire flow of the song. Through active discussion with other students, they can enjoy friendships for each other. The effects have been verified through many case studies. They can have more aesthetic experiences in Korean traditional music education and actively participate in musical activities, and higher educational effects can be achieved. If students are instructed to have skills and knowledge stepwise and completely, Arts POPEL will be successful. It is teachers who lead students to have musical skills, power of expression, and ability to appreciate and criticize music. Also, this study will help students have interest in Korean traditional music and find joy in music as well as it presents various teaching directions in Korean traditional music which excavate and develop a variety of abilities students have.
The Korean traditional music program using Arts POPEL provides opportunities for students to join in a variety of musical activities using their gifts and express new ideas.
This study has limitations in that it is difficult to identify actual problems at school teaching as it was not tested and researched in real practical way while it presented only educational directions of Arts POPEL. However, if the program is applied for school education based on the results of the study, students will be interested in an effective teaching method of Arts POPEL and new musical activities.
Finally, it is expected that the results of the study make a contribution to effective teaching and learning of music, and its evaluation, and activation of true Korean traditional music education at school as well as both teachers and students will be satisfied with the program.
