Analysis of the Theory of Education
in Plato's Republic

This paper is based on Plato's educational ideas. Plato's educational ideas are shown throughout his whole writings, especially his early work up to The Republic. The theme of his writings is virtue, which all education aims at. Especially the Protagoras, Menon, and Republic are focusing on the education of virtue. The purpose of this paper is to consider the education theories presented by Republic by focusing on the education methods.
The paper is divided into 3 chapters and the first chapter will discuss what virtue is in educational purposes by dividing national virtues with human virtues. Also the point that the essence of politics is education will be proven by the fact that the role of politics is to produce noble people.
In accordance with previous stated ideologies and goals of education, chapter 2 presents the selected educational process, which is classified as "Musical education", "Physical education" and "Philosophy education". Of these, musical and physical education are courses in which those produce general guardians and aims at equipping justice, temperance, and courage. While philosophy education is considered a higher form of liberal education where it purposes to teach the virtue of wisdom that a ruler must be equipped with.
Finally, chapter 3 presents methods of education and those are classified the teaching methods for virtues of character, such as justice, temperance, and courage with the methods for virtue of wisdom. Mainly for virtues of character, training or rote teaching methods are used, while the dialectic-based maieutic method are used for virtue of wisdom.
