- Abstract
- The purpose of this thesis is to investigate features of English phrasal verbs by classifying them syntactically. In addition, current trends with phrasal verbs in use are analyzed by referring English text books for Korean high school students.
In this thesis, the definition and characteristics of phrasal verbs are examined thorough comparison analysis to prepositional verbs. The phrasal verbs are connected with preceding verbs, but NP follows for prepositional verbs. The phrasal verbs can be characterized by their passivization, particle movement rule, action nominalization, substitution of verb-article into a single-word and so on. NP can be inserted between verbs and particles selectively but obligatorily between pronominals. Distinguishing characters of prepositional verbs include insertion of adverb between verb and preposition, preposition-fronting, pied-piping, verb-gapping etc. With the above characterizations, Verb phrases can largely be classified into phrasal verbs and prepositional verbs. The phrasal verbs are composed of intransitive phrasal verbs and transitive phrasal verbs, which can be divided into separable transitive phrasal verbs and inseparable transitive phrasal verbs.
Based on the described studies, the phrasal verbs in the High School Textbooks were classified. It showed that entire number of verb phrases was 263 and those of phrasal verbs and prepositional verbs were 166 and 87 respectively. The phrasal verbs include 74 intransitive phrasal verbs and 92 transitive phrasal verbs that comprise 77 separable transitive phrasal verbs and 15 inseparable transitive phrasal verbs. These data indicate that phrasal verbs are used more frequently than prepositional verbs and transitive phrasal verbs were used more often than intransitive phrasal verbs.
This study can be good information for students and teachers in secondary schools who have difficulties in understanding phrasal verbs.
