Abstract

A study of on the songs of the Goryeo dynasty

Untill now this study tried to consider comprehensively about , a popular song of late Goryeo period.

The song describes social background of late Goryeo period when an economic and ideological base collapsed due to internal and external conflicts, corruption of the ruling class, and wandering farmers without their own land after the nation was subjected to Yuan Dynasty.

The public frankly resolved their suffering and sorrow through songs sung by a woman, a poetic speaker in the song.

Such kinds of songs were very popular as a sort of folk song among the public, but in the process of its being introduced to court music, popular songs had diverse themes and more refined composition of each stance.

In assuming, popular songs of Goryeo period might have been extensively loved by common people, musicians, Giseng, shamans, and eunuch in a middle-ranking government official, and influential families in a people of the highest ranks including royal families.

In relation of and as a popular song of Goryeo period, the two songs were separated first, but in the process of 's introduction into court music, was combined with it to meet musical needs.

Then, in respect to the author of , it has two hypotheses based on the grounds mentioned above : a popular song and a popular song refined by influential families.

Meanwhile, is recorded as words of four stances in Korean in the <>. Settings are changed from stance 2 to stance 4(Samjangsa Temple, a well and a bar) and characters are replaced(temple owner, a monk who is first in line to succeed his master, a well's dragon and a well bucket, a bar owner and a wine bucket), but the contents and additional phrase for fun are the same as the first stance.

All the four stances implicitly reveal blame and sexual humiliation a women of Goryeo period as a poetic speaker felt from low fellows to men of the ruling class although spatial backgrounds were different.

As above, a popular song of Goryeo period, intended to express and parody sorrow of the public frankly through a piece of song rather than escape from corrupted reality of late Goryeo period under the governance of Yuan Dynasty.
