- ABSTRACT
A Study on Sukchon Im Uk-ryong's Poetry on Friendship

This study aims to analyse the thought and character of Im Uk-ryong(1496∼1568), focusing on his poetry on friendship.
This study confined the focus to Im Uk-ryong's poetry on friendship, paying attention to the friendship he had literary persons from diverse areas including Honam area. With a focus on the poetry on friendship, the study analysed categories, classification and types and characters of the poetry.
The points of the study are presented as follows:
1. His life followed the following course: ‘Seongsan(before government service) → government service → returning to Seongsan → returning to government post → returning to Seongsan again. In addition, The course is based on the following areas: ‘villages around Haenam and Seongsan, Hanyang, Seongsan and neighboring villages, and Gangwondo and Seongsan.
2. His poetry on friendship is categorized vertically and horizontally. The horizontal relations were made with peers and Buddhist monks and the vertical relations were made with junior scholars. The vertical relations between teachers and pupils were excluded from the category of the friendship poetry.
3. His friendship poetry is classified according to periods: government post, Seongsan and Buddhist monks.
4. His friendship poetry is categorized into the following types: Confucian realism, Zhangzi's unworldliness, Buddhism friendly tendency and spiritual orientation, and description of natural scenery. The types of friendship poetry based on the category above are presented as follows:
1) Friendship at Government Post
There are a total of 45 poems he wrote while being in the government post. The subjects of the poems were Sung Su-chim(1493∼1564), Shin Jam(1491∼1554), Choi Yeon(1503∼1549) and Um Hon(1508∼1553), which were affected by Confucian realism and Zhangzi's unworldliness.
(1) Friendship poems Im Uk-ryong sent to Sung Su-chim
They were mainly affected by Confucian realism and Zhangzi's unworldliness.
(2) Friendship poems Im Uk-ryong sent to Shin Jam were affected by Confucian realism and Zhangzi's unworldliness.
(3) Friendship poems Im Uk-ryong sent to Choi Yeon were affected by Zhangzi's unworldliness.
(4) Friendship poems Im Uk-ryong sent to Um Hon were affected by Zhangzi's unworldliness. In addition, they show gaps from Confucian realism and environmental background as a reason why he had friendship with Buddhist monks.
The poems he wrote at his government post were affected by Confucian realism and Zhangzi's unworldliness.
2) Friendship Poetry at Seongsan
There are a total of 23 poems on friendship he wrote at Seongsan. Most of the poems sent to Song Sun(1493∼1582) and Kim Yun-he(1501∼1572) dealt with friendship.
(1) Friendship poems Im Uk-ryong sent to Song Sun were affected by Zhangzi's unworldliness. 「Hwagichon」 also shows gaps with Confucian realism.
(2) All the friendship poems Im Uk-ryong sent to Kim Yun-je were affected by Zhangzi's unworldliness.
All the poems he wrote at Seongsan were affected by Zhangzi's unworldliness.
3) Friendship poems orienting Buddhist monks
There are a total of 76 poems on friendship he wrote towards Buddhist monks. The poems he sent to Neungsa, Oksangin and Insa showed his buddhism friendly tendency. In addition, it was discovered that Buddhism was one of his spiritual inclinations.
(1) The poems he sent to Neungsa showed his taste of Buddhism and spiritual inclinations.
(2) The poems he sent to Oksangin showed that he was fascinated with beautiful natural scenery, and intended to stay in nature.
(3) The poems he sent to Insa showed his taste of Buddhism and his detailed description on nature.
5. The poems on friendship are characterized by freshness, integrity and character.
