Abstract

Most verbs have more than one meaning, among each of which there exist certain relationships. The purpose of this study is to show some systematic relationships among the interrelated meanings which a lexical verb hold may possess, This study also tried to view some phenomena of semantic extension and to relate to cognitive grammar in showing prototype/ extension, schema/ instances and so on. This thesis analyzes the internal semantic structures of a polysemous word ‘hold’ to verify the validity of semantic network approach to polysemy word within the framework of cognitive linguistics. It is shown that all of its senses are closely interwoven through human cognitive mechanisms such as image-schematic transformation, metaphor, and profiling.
