An Analysis on the Textbook of High School Grammar

This study aims to analyse the contents and theoretical problems in units of『Grammar』(2002) in high school textbooks published according to the 7th Curriculum of Korean Language and present directions of desirable grammar education.
Chapter 1 organized the purpose, range and method of the study, and results of previous studies. The grammar textbooks reflecting the 7th Curriculum of Korean Language attempted to solve problems of the textbooks based on the 6th Curriculum of Korean language, but still some problems are left as a few grammatical theories were combined for grammatical norms. Therefore, this study analysed the units of 『Grammar』(2002) and identified its problems, and based on the results, present directions for effective education.
Chapter 2 compared objectives and contents of grammar according to the 7th Curriculum with compositional systems of grammar textbooks to identify whether the units of 『Grammar』(2002) faithfully reflect contents presented in each area of the 7th Curriculum of Korean Language. The reasons why this chapter looked at the curriculum were presented as follows: A curriculum presents directions of education and a medium which reflects the contents of the curriculum is a textbook. Therefore, it was believed that identifying the curriculum has to precede analysing grammar textbooks.
Chapter 3 analysed each unit of『Grammar』(2002) and identified problems, and based on the results, presented directions to improve it. This chapter focused on units of 'voice, words, vocabulary, meanings and stories' except units of ' Language and Korean Language' and 'norms of Korean language' which belong to general theories on grammar and norms.
Chapter 4 summarized the results above. In addition, it presented future directions for textbooks on grammar. Future textbooks should reflect the results obtained through research on changes in linguistic environment and school grammar should consider the phenomena of linguistic heterogeneity between North and South Korea. This study has meaning in that it identified problems based on what was analysed in each unit and suggested directions which can be reflected to future textbooks although it has a limit as it presented directions based only on contents of grammar textbooks.
